I am currently the one of two golf teaching professional at Aston Oaks Golf Club in North Bend, Ohio. I work the pro shop on a part time basses two to three days a week. I also coach two golf teams; Seton High School JV golf team and St. Aloysius Gonzaga 7th-8th grades golf team. At the end of this season I am going to take the winter off and travel to a warmer climate where we can play a little golf and possibility do some teaching. My golfing story is very short. I did not take up the game until I retired from AT&T after 32 years as a manager where I was involved in employee development, training and computer development.
From 1948 my freshman year in high school through 1988 I was totally involved in amateur wrestling at the junior high school, high school, collage, and Olympic style wrestling; as a competitor, trainer, coach and official. I was the team leader and official traveling with United States wrestling team to numerous events around the world. For the most part these were the athletes vying to make the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams. In 1987 I began to lessening my involvement in wrestling and need another sport.
Golf seemed to be a good choice; I could stay involved with athletes. I bought a set of golf clubs and struggled to learn the game. I started working at a golf course part time doing computer work and covering the pro shop. The PGA professional giving me lessons and I began to understand the challenges in playing this game. I decided the only way I could concur these challenges was to learn to teach and help others enjoy the game, share my passion for the game. I love working with people especially with young people. I knew I need some certification to teach. I first joined the USGTF and started giving lessons with some success. I heard about the PGTCA from another teaching professional and he encouraged me to take your course. I did and learned a lot more and have become even more successful in my golf teaching. I did end up taking the PGA playable test and considered joining the PGA but the program is much to expensive for what I wanted to do especially at my age.
I am not a scratch golfer but I am a very good teacher and coach as result of some very good instructors. I continue to study and learn the game, reading a lot of books; some of my favorites are by; David Leadbetter, Jim McLean, Manuel de la Torre and Dave Pelz. I have attended three PGA coaching and teaching summits and any change I get to attend seminars put on by noted golf teachers I try to attend.
